Buick to use micro-patterned polycarbonate at core of LED lighting

"Microstructured plastic inner lenses enable even illumination and design freedom in rear tail lamps, while reducing the number of LEDs required and part complexity in lamp. The first such inner lens thermoformed from polycarbonate (PC) has debuted in the 2013 Buick Enclave.

Developed by 3M (Minneapolis, MN) and known as Uniform Lighting Lens (ULL) technology, the precision engineered inner lens incorporates two types of microstructure with detail of less than 100 micrometers. These structures are designed to balance the optical properties of uniform illumination from all angles and luminous intensity.

3m1

Close-up of the lighted cavity shows consistency of light as it wraps around a tight corner, enabling design flexibility of tail lamps.
3m2
Thermoformed and micro-structured inner lens realizes uniform lighting.

Production of the lenses involves extrusion of a 1-mm-thick PC film with micro-replicated features using Makrolon 2447 from Bayer Material Science (Leverkusen, Germany), followed by forming of the lens itself in a multicavity thermoforming tool. Tool making process innovations have enabled the combination of micro-structure and macrostructure features in the finished tool. Post-process trimming is carried out in a metal die. A micro structure size of 100 micrometers on an inner lens is not possible with the injection molded part process according to 3M.

The lenses are shipped to Tier 1 Magna International (Troy, MI), which worked with 3M on the development of the lens, in optimized packaging to ensure moisture control, for integration into the lamp assembly.

The ULL lamp employing the new lens with two LEDs weighs 620g versus 1134g for the original Enclave bulb lamp whose inner lens was injection-molded. The minimal thickness achieved by thermoformed microstructured lens also has potential to reduce number of LEDs needed to execute lamp design, contributing to reduced energy consumption and weight reduction in rear lamps. Power requirement has been reduced to 3.5W versus 35W for the stop function. A further bonus is that lamp lifetime has been extended from 5000 hours to 30,000 hours.

"Our Uniform Lighting Lens technology is a solution to several challenges our customers face," said Jeff Boettcher, new business development manager, 3M Automotive. "It can be used not only to create new, modern lighting designs, but also allows for manufacturers to create signature images to generate brand differentiation."

Pop quiz: Why did old Buicks have portholes on their sides?

Buick2
Answer:  It's actually quite simple!  The portholes--and the amber lights that would flash intermittently inside of them-- were there to mimic superheated exhaust firing out of the headers of a WWII era warplane!  Buick designer Ned Nickles came up with the idea originally (after having done the modification to his personal '48 Roadmaster convertible no less!), and decided to add them to production model schematics only 7 months before mass production.

Car tip of the day!

Do not fill up if you see the tanker!

If you happen to see a gasoline tanker filling the tanks at your local gas station, come back another day or go to a different station. As the station’s underground tanks are being filled, the turbulence can stir up sediment. Sediment in your gas can clog fuel filters and fuel injectors, causing poor performance and possibly necessitating repairs.

Buick proved that biggest isn't always better with the '87 Grand National

"During the heyday of the American muscle-car craze, the Detroit mantra for horsepower was “Bigger is always better.”

Then big changes started occurring in the 1970s as a reaction to rising gas prices, higher inflation and steeper insurance premiums. Performance fell out of favor with the car-buying public during this time of uncertainty.

Produced during 1980s, the Grand National wasn’t your grandparents’ stodgy, grocery-getting Buick. Unlike its four-wheeled predecessors that relied on eight cylinders, the Grand National utilized a V-6 engine, bolstered with a turbocharger to make its tire-smoking magic.

John O’Connell owns a 1987 example of this fast machine, the final year of the model’s production. The last Grand National rolled off the assembly line on Dec. 11, 25 years ago this week. O’Connell can attest to the auto’s all-out performance nature.

“I don’t race the car, nor do I take it to the drag strip, but even on the open road or tollway, I quickly figured out why it was the fastest production car of 1987,” the Lake Zurich resident said. When the Garrett T-3 turbocharger kicks in, it actually throws you back in the seat, he says.

“The car will get away from you in no time if you’re not careful to watch the throttle.”

After being assembled in the Pontiac, Mich., his coupe was sent to a buyer in Ottawa, Canada, before eventually making its way to a 2006 auction in Pennsylvania. It was purchased by a Roselle dealer and brought back to the Chicago area, and shortly after O’Connell made the acquisition.

“The vehicle was in good cosmetic condition, but mechanically neglected,” he said. With the help of his son, John Jr., the gear head performed a proper overhaul. At some point the 231-cubic-inch V-6 had been fitted with an aftermarket intake system, which was the first thing to go.

To aid in the exhaling process, the well-worn, low-restriction exhaust system with dual mufflers was replaced with a new unit. The Turbo-Hydramatic 200-4R transmission received a rebuild and a new torque converter.

To put the race-ride back into the suspension, new coil springs and shocks were mounted at each corner. The interior also got a refresh: new upholstery, door panels and roof panels to the gray and black cabin.

The all-black exterior is made even more sinister with the addition of factory blacked-out bumpers, headlight and taillight trims and grille. To bring back some sparkle to that sinister demeanor, the original 16-inch wheels were rechromed.

Performance for the Grand National was rated at a 13.5-second, 102-mph quarter mile with a zero-to-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds.

“I honestly feel GM stubbed their toe when they built these highly potent cars,” O’Connell said, because its engine outperformed those in GM’s standard-bearer. “I’m sure there were a lot of Corvette owners who were more than a little disappointed with their purchase.”

O’Connell said there is a documentary, “Black Air,” being released this week in conjunction with the 25-year anniversary to commemorate the Grand National powerhouse.

“It’s mind-blowing to think that the stereotypical ’60s and ’70s muscle cars commonly had such displacements as 409, 440, 455. Here’s this V-6 engine and for all practical purposes, is half the size,” he said. “Despite that, it still runs with the big boys.”

It has been 71 long years since the attacks on Pearl Harbor, but we will always remember those who lost their lives in the attack.  We salute those who made a sacrifice that day--and in the days, weeks, months, and years that followed--to fight for the future that we currently share.  Most every American banded together to help their country in their own way.  Let us learn from their spirit and their resolve, so that we too can give our children and our children's children a future worth having.

Buick massively popular in China

 Buick in China

"Imagine a world where Buick outsells Chevrolet.

It’s called China.

Buick is the top seller for General Motors' Shanghai GM venture. November sales in China for the Buick brand reached 70,172 vehicles, a 17% gain from the same month a year earlier. The Regal sold 9,204 units, almost 10 times the volume it sold in the U.S. last month.

Chevrolet sold 63,012 vehicles in China last month, a 15% gain over the same period a year earlier.

GM is the largest foreign automaker in China.

After just 11 months, GM and its joint ventures in China set an annual sales record of just under 2.6 million vehicles, about 45,000 more than the automaker sold in all of 2011. That was up 10% from the same month a year earlier.

China is GM’s biggest market and will outsell what the company does in the U.S. this year by 10% to 15% depending on the December sales results in both nations.

GM sold 260,018 vehicles in November there, its best November ever and its second-highest for any month in China."

2013 Buick Verano gets five star crash test rating, NHTSA and IIHS impressed

Verano

"The 2013 Buick Verano compact was named a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety earlier this year, and added another safety accomplishment earlier this week. The luxury sedan received a 5-star Vehicle Score for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration after achieving passing marks in all three tests.

General Motors released the news in a press release today.

Since the beginning of the year, every new Buick car released has received the highest possible rating from the IIHS and NHTSA.

The new Buick was tested under the most recent NHTSA Assessment Program and achieved the highest possible score based on frontal and side crash tests. The test also includes rollover resistance according to the NHSTA website.

Testers put each vehicle through three test segments and afterword they add up the numbers from each test to determine the Overall Vehicle Score.

"New car customers leaving a Buick dealership can drive away knowing they are in a vehicle with superior crash protection," said Gay Kent, GM General Director of Vehicle Safety in the press release. "The brand's long-running record of five-star overall vehicle scores and Top Safety Picks is a testament to our commitment to exceptional vehicle crash performance."

The 2013 model comes with standard Rear Camera that shows a view from the car's rear bumper when the vehicle is in reverse according to the press release. Available features also include Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Side Blind Zone.

The Verano is made up of 60 percent high-strength steel that allowing drivers and passengers to feel safer than ever. Other developments the company made for the 2013 model includes four-wheel disc brakes, a collapsible pedal system that reduces the chance of getting a leg injury and a panic brake override. "

Buick rumored to be working on new Grand National

gnx660.jpg

"Introduced in 1982, the Buick Regal Grand National began life as a special edition honoring Buick’s back-to-back titles in NASCAR’s Grand National series. However, delivering just 125 horsepower, these race-inspired models left a lot to be desired.

Just two years later, the car received an engine transplant that would eventually see it become one of the fastest models money could buy. Now, it looks like the Grand National is set to return, though this time it won’t be based on the Regal, and it won’t be a coupe.

Citing an inside source, Edmunds is reporting that Buick is looking to launch a new Grand National sedan as well as new versions of the T-Type and GNX variants.

Instead of using the Regal as the basis of its new Grand National range, Buick engineers would likely go with the Alpha rear-wheel-drive platform currently underpinning the highly praised Cadillac ATS sedan. The overall size of the cars should be similar to that of the ATS, even though the Alpha platform can spawn bigger models.

All three variants are said to share basic powertrains and suspension, though with different settings. It’s not clear what powertrains would be used, though GM’s upcoming twin-turbocharged V-6 is a likely candidate. This could allow an output of between 300 and 400 horsepower.

The GNX, however, would likely feature GM’s new LT1 V-8 engine, which is set to debut in the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette. This engine would be good for about 450 horsepower. Note, the addition of the LT1 V-8 would also mean that the upcoming Cadillac ATS-V will likely adopt V-8 power as well.

Note, there’s another twist to this story. One of the key people behind the project, GM’s North American boss Mark Reuss, is a previous GNX owner. He also happened to be the boss of GM’s Australian division Holden during 2008 and 2009, which has led to speculation that a version of the new Buick Grand National may serve as the Holden Commodore that’s due after the upcoming VF Commodore (nee Chevy SS) has run its course, which is currently scheduled for some time in 2018.

Holden is an expert in the development of rear-wheel-drive cars at GM and may end up developing the new Grand National alongside its next Commodore. Holden has been appointed the task of developing two new models for China based on global GM platforms and it’s possible the new Grand National could be one of them."

Buick May Redesign Logo

Buick Verano Turbo 2013 1280x960 wallpaper 0a 623x452 Buick May Redesign Logo

The General Motors restructuring left only four brands still standing in the United States: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. Years ago, it seemed unlikely that Buick would be one of those four. Thanks to the Chinese market and a brilliant partnership with Opel, Buick is doing very well here and abroad.

The line-up has been completely revamped, beginning with the Enclave, and continuing with the Regal, Verano and the Encore. This revamp has worked; sales are up, transaction prices are on the rise, and the average buyer age is down. Ten years ago Buick redesigned its logo to project a more modern image.

13fusiondat

Included in that was a thick new chrome design that abandoned the red white and blue colors always present in the logo. Curiously, those colors have been kept for the Chinese market. Many have wished for

a return of those classic colors. The Detroit Free Press reports that Buick may freshen its logo. And the news comes from GM North America President Mark Reuss.

He was speaking with a group of journalists as part of the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards. While the brand may be getting new logo, there were no details available beyond that. Most likely the logo update will not be a radical change, as Buick’s logo is recognizable all over the world (for better or for worse…). Buick sales should get a nice boost next year from the Verano Turbo. After that, we aren’t sure what is next for the brand. But, a sports car or rear-wheel drive flagship model would be a perfect addition.

2013 Buick Enclave wins CUV of Texas award at Truck Rodeo

Buick

The new 2013 Buick Enclave CUV (crossover utility vehicle) was named the CUV of Texas at the 20th annual Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) Truck Rodeo just completed at Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch Texas near San Antonio.

The announcement this morning (Oct. 22) of the overall category win by the 2013 Buick Enclave was in addition to almost a sweep by General Motors of the CUV individual categories

The CUV category was all but owned by General Motors as their 2013 Chevrolet Traverse (LTZ FWD) was also named the runner-up to the 2013 Acadia in the Full-size CUV category.

General Motors has made a major leadership commitment to the crossover segment with new and upgraded styling, engineering, technology and materials being introduced in their 2013 models. The TAWA journalists recognized this new segment leadership by General Motors in their naming of these vehicles as winners in their respective categories.

The 2013 Buick Enclave, just introduced, ably demonstrated the Buick attention to the elements that drive a Buick customer's purchase decision: styling, quality and riding comfort.

The 2013 Buick Enclave entered in the competition was the 1SN premium level model with a base MSRP of $45,625. With the sunroof ($1,400) and the Navigation with DVD ($2,240) and adding delivery, this Champaign Silver Metallic beauty with the new Cocoa Leather interior was a standout at $50,090.

Some of those specific elements in this new Enclave include new body color front, rear fascias and rocker moldings; styling changes in hood, fenders and front grille and LED daytime running lamps, headlamps, tail lamps and new 19 and 20 inch wheels.

On the inside, the new interior design and colors are accented by an amazing ice blue ambient lighting that runs the width of the new instrument panel and continues into the upgraded door trims with real stitching. New easy to view and operate climate controls along with the Intellilink infotainment system round out the functional center stack area.

There is an available eight-way power front seat adjuster plus Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross-Traffic avoidance systems. The 2013 Enclave also includes a new industry-first standard Front Center Air Bag and rear vision camera system.

Powered by the reliable and efficient 3.6L DOHC V6 with 288 hp generating 270 lb.-ft. torque, a new updated electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive gives a powerful ride that is comfortable on the new improved suspension delivering a quieter ride than ever before.

And, for those who want to tow a small trailer with watercraft for family weekends, the Enclave has tow capacity of 2,000 pounds for this new standard of luxury from Buick.

GM to debut new GMC Sierra pickups in December

000000000000broke_down_car

General Motors plans to reveal its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups Dec. 13 in Detroit, officials said Monday.

The highly anticipated trucks are central to GM's profitability in North America. The Silverado 1500, which hasn't been redesigned since 2006, is easily GM's best-selling vehicle in the U.S. at 298,200 units in the first nine months of the year.

The 2014 Silverado and Sierra are expected to hit showrooms at an unspecified time in 2013. The public will get to see the vehicles in person at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January.

"The bold exterior design of the new Silverado reflects the enhanced capabilities of the truck while features such as jewel-like, projector beam headlamps showcase the careful attention given to every detail," GM said in a statement.

The Silverado has entered the "final validation" phase and "torture testing," the automaker said earlier this month. The pickup competes against Ford's F-150 series and Chrysler's Ram pickup.

The vehicle will start production in 2013 at the company's plants in Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Silao, Mexico.

Silverado marketing manager Tony Truelove said in a recent interview that the new vehicle would balance "performance capability and fuel economy."

"We don't trade off one to get the other. We feel we have a very good overall truck and will continue to improve on that formula for the next generation," Truelove said.

My husband and I corresponded with Enrique for about one month via email. We chose Beck and Masten due to their diverse inventroy and surperior customer service. When we arrived at the dealership, Enrique had vehicles set aside with our desired options. We made our selection, discussed trade-in, and the negotiations began. Enrique was very professional and offered his expertise which allowed us to close our deal in a timely manner. Of utmost importance, my husband and I felt like we received a great deal on the vehicle we wanted. We were there after hours discussing add-ons with Gay, who also gave us a great deal. Once the car was mine, Enrique was waiting on us, after hours to go over the features in my new car. We are very satisfited with our experience and the staff at Beck and Masten!

Check out this great Edmunds review for Beck & Masten Buick GMC!

Mike S. was a joy to work with and made the car buying process easy and very pain-free. I was given the option to take the vehicle I was interested in home for a day to show my wife (who would be unable to visit the dealership until a later date). Even after returning the vehicle and still being unsure we were given another 24 hour period to fall in love with the vehicle, which we did! By the time we were done all my wife had to go to the dealership for was to sign paperwork which was a breeze. I appreciate Mike and his efforts to go above and beyond for my family.

Turbo Boost, Euro Feel: 2013 Buick Verano Turbo

00000tornado

MSRP: $23,080 (Verano); $29,105 (Turbo); as Tested:$32,360

Introduced last year, Buick's compact Verano returns for it sophomore season with an available, turbocharged engine. What a difference a drivetrain makes.

The addition of the new turbo for 2013 gives Verano an entirely different feel. Imported from the Buick Regal, intercooled and turbocharged, the power output of the direct injection, Ecotec four belies its size. The 2.0 liter turbo makes 250 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm, and 260 lb. ft. of torque @ 2,000 rpm. That's plus 70 and 89, respectively, compared to the 2.4 liter four that's offered in standard Veranos, and it translates to a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds, in the 3,300 lb. Buick. Quick it is, with a smooth, lag-free power flow. The power boost doesn't extract a perceivable penalty at the pumps, either. Whereas the EPA expects standard Verano models to return between 20-21 mpg's city, 30-32 highway, Turbo versions rate 21/30.

Ably assisting the turbo is the 6-speed manual transmission. Drivers have their no-cost choice of either the stick or a six-speed automatic. We've reached the point where a manual transmission is rarely found on anything but a sports car or an econobox.

So finding a three-pedal option on the Verano Turbo comes as a happy surprise. The turbo four/six-speed stick combination really wakes the car up. Carving my way through a curvy road at the Verano's launch event, I used the stick to plant the engine right in the middle of its sweet spot, and held it there. Great fun. And once that road was ironed straight, a couple of crisp shifts through the remaining gears set the car up to cruise at highway speeds.

I drove both engine/transmission combos, by the way, and if you want an automatic, this one works nicely with the turbo, too. The only caveat is that it is not a dual clutch unit, so even if the car had paddle shifters (which it doesn't), you wouldn't have the grin-inducing sensation of instantaneous gear changes, when you shift it yourself.

A quick word here about quiet. Like all Buicks, Verano undergoes a combination of treatments aimed at reducing, absorbing or blocking out noise and vibration. Collectively, Buick refers to this as Quiet Tuning, and it does make for a noticeably low noise level in the cabin. So when I set the car into that twisting road at 3,500 rpm, I could feel the power on tap under my foot, but engine noise was a non-issue. The use of laminated glass in particular (everywhere except the backlight) seems to be particularly effective at stifling exterior sound.

Quiet Tuning is one thing; chassis tuning is something else. Buick has done both, tweaking the Verano Turbo's suspension and electric power steering calibration to sharpen its reflexes. The Verano is positioned as a luxury sedan, not a sport sedan. But, turbocharged and with chassis tweaked, it's clearly athletic enough to be very fun to drive. At the same time, it maintains a level of ride comfort that buyers expect of an upscale compact car.

The Turbo model enters at the head of the Verano class. This means that beyond the amped up powertrain and beefed-up suspension, Verano Turbo is packing a generous complement of standard equipment — fully contented, as they say.

Skimming some highlights from the Turbo's roster of gear: dual exhaust, sport pedals, rear spoiler, a Bose, 9-speaker premium sound system, leather-appointed upholstery, push-button start, rear park assist and rearview camera, side blind zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. About the only options are a power sunroof, a navigation system and some special, exterior colors.

Also standard is Intellilink, which connects your smartphone to the color, touch screen display, using a USB port or Bluetooth. Smartphones can then be controlled by voice command or steering wheel mounted switchgear. The system also allows streaming audio through your phone via services like Stitcher or Pandora.

Verano Turbo's interior will suit virtually any height passenger up front. With six footers up front, like-size passengers can fit in back (snugly), with some compromises.

Visibility is generally good, and the army of electronics mentioned above has your back when parking, changing lanes or just trying to back out of a parking lot spot, without getting clipped. Interior fit and finish is nicely done, with an upscale look and feel. HVAC controls on the center stack are easy to reach and operate. Above them, other controls are clustered together, and harder to pick up at a glance. That starts with the starter; the push button for which is less prominent than it ought to be.

Inside storage is limited (small center console, door pockets, glove box), however, the trunk is usefully sized (14.7 cu. ft.) and shaped. Trunk hinges impinge on the contents, but there's an extra, small, hidden storage space below the load floor. Rear seatbacks fold (mostly) flat for extra cargo carrying options.

Verano Turbo is cleanly styled, quiet and well appointed. And, particularly in manual transmission guise, the Buick has a distinctly, European driving feel. One of the goals for Verano is to bring new people to the brand. On that score, after one year, the numbers are impressive. Some 52 percent of Verano buyers are conquests from other manufacturers. That was before the debut of the Turbo.

The addition of this model pretty much guarantees a new pool of Buick shoppers; ones who favor a sportier sedan. I think they'll find a lot to like here.

I called the dealship from my cell phone and Enrique quickly answered the phone and invited me to stop by the dealer once I had finshed working for the day to test drive a new truck. When I arrived, I was impressed with the beautiful new showroom and such a large selction of vehicles to choose from. Enrique listened to me while I told him the search criteria I had. He then allowed me to test drive a GMC Terrain. I was very impressed with the quailty of construction and durability of this model. The new technology was overwhelming, but Enrique took time to explain all of the features and benefits. The dealship was scheduled to close at 9 PM, But they stayed until 9:45 to complete the paper work, as I could not leave without purchasing my new truck. They did not have the exact color that I preferred, so Enrique drove to the other side of Houston to pick up the vehicle on my behalf. Now I'm ready for a road trip! If you are thinking about getting a new vehicle, you should see Enrique. I almost forgot to mention 0% interest! Jay Floyd Real Estate Broker

Buick and GMC Future Products through 2015: What to Expect

000000000000broke_down_car
In the next 12 months, GM says we’ll see four new trucks for GMC—and presumably Chevy, too—and two new sedans for Buick. Later, GMC will get a new Canyon mid-size pickup truck, based on the all-new Chevy Colorado. Here’s what you can expect of the new models.

2014 Buick LaCrosse (spy photo)

Buick LaCrosse

For the 2014 model year, the LaCrosse will get a major reskin and updated technology, including the latest touch-screen iteration of the Intellilink infotainment setup. It’ll be mechanically similar to the new Cadillac XTS and introduced-but-not-on-sale-yet Chevy Impala, offering a hybrid four and a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6 and either front- or all-wheel drive. Once fairly suave, the current LaCrosse’s interior hasn’t aged well; for 2014 it’ll be all new, and judging from the XTS and Impala, modern and high-quality.

2014 Buick Regal GS (spy photo)

Buick Regal

Unlike the LaCrosse, which will be heavily reworked, the Regal just gets a face lift next year. Figure on some shuffling of the powertrain lineup, which is now out of sync with the rest of GM’s fleet. The Regal eAssist with a 2.4-liter four and small hybrid system probably will remain the base car, but don’t be shocked if a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four shows up beneath it.

The real changes could happen in turbo territory. Where the current Regal Turbo is rated at 220 hp, a newer version of that car’s engine—different turbocharger, altered intake and exhaust—delivers 259 ponies in the Malibu Turbo and 250 in the Verano Turbo. Sure, Buick has a 270-hp Regal GS, but why set up the middle child of this premium brand get trounced at stoplights by Mom’s Chevy?

If the Regal Turbo does hop to 250-ish hp, the GS still could carry over its powerplant. The horsepower advantage would be small, but beyond that the Regal GS is supposed to be a full-on performance car, with a sportier suspension and extroverted styling compared to the Regal Turbo. In fantasyland, the 2014 Regal GS would get all-wheel drive and a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 currently slated for an uplevel version of the Cadillac XTS and—in a different state of tune—the forthcoming ATS-V.

2014 GMC Yukon (spy photo)

GMC Sierra, Yukon, and Canyon

GMC still is the money factory for GM, selling similar cars to Chevy at higher—or in the case of Denali models, much higher—prices. But the new Sierra and Yukon won’t just be pricier clones of their bow-tied brethren.

Last January, GM’s North America president Mark Reuss promised that the next big trucks and SUVs will be more cosmetically distinct from each other. The Yukon may have some significant interior upgrades, not just in aesthetic and materials but in functionality, too, Reuss told us, which we’ve read to mean better packaging for folding seats and improved passenger space.

2014 GMC Sierra (spy photo)

GM also quietly, suddenly confirmed that, yes, GMC will get a new Canyon mid-size pickup spun off of the all-new global Chevy Colorado that’s also coming to the U.S. Both mid-size trucks will target both fuel-conscious truck buyers and also the Toyota Tacoma’s substantial audience for lifestyle sport trucks. Figure on V-6 engines for the Canyon and Colorado, but there’s a strong chance that the Opel diesel four being prepped for our Cruze also could be slotted into the trucks.

The mid-size-truck news is significant unto itself but also for the rest of the brand’s lineup. Mr. Reuss has said it’s far easier to design a mid-size truck to be efficient from the start than to try to “lightweight” a Silverado or Sierra. GM doesn’t want to risk durability for its big trucks by bringing in expensive, lightweight materials or using lighter components. Instead, the General will look to boost fuel economy via improved aerodynamics and the adoption of electric steering, as well as direct injection and the expansion of cylinder-deactivation tech across the latest-generation V-6 and V-8 engines.

Naturally, every new GMC will be available in fully loaded Denali trim, from the Sierra HD to the 4×8-sheet-of-plywood-hauling Yukon XL.

5 Money Saving Car Tips!

0000000000000000935img00001
As cars have become more advanced over time, it has been increasingly difficult for enterprising owners to perform basic maintenance and repairs. While some jobs do require professional expertise and pricey tools, there are still many things that a handy owner can do to keep a car running in top shape and save money in the process.

Below are a few tips from our automotive experts.

1) Treating hazy headlight lenses. Modern headlight assemblies usually have clear plastic covers that can grow hazy over the years from exposure to the elements. To save the expense of changing the whole headlight reflector assembly, you can use a restoration kit, usually consisting of abrasive cloths and a special finishing liquid. Some kits are applied with elbow grease, while others call for an electric drill.

2) Windshield wipers. You can extend the life of wiper blades by keeping them clean. Wipe off the rubber edge with a paper towel moistened with glass cleaner, or water and a little dish soap. Wiper blades don't last long. In our tests we've found that six months is about the best you can expect a set of wiper blades to stay in top form.

3) Wash and wax your car. Giving your car a good cleaning helps preserve the paint by removing road grime and residues that can eat through the finish. The time spent hand washing a car gives you a close-up view of every body panel, so you can spot scratches, chips, and dings you may not have otherwise noticed. To maintain a quality shine, periodically apply car wax. A spray wax is best suited to weekly or special-occasion applications. Other waxes can be used less frequently, every 2-3 months.

4) Light bulbs. Changing a light bulb isn't difficult—most these days have a twist-and-pull bayonet base or they simply pull out and push in. Bulb specifications are usually found in the owner's manual. However, accessing a bulb (usually called a lamp in industry parlance) can be a real chore. Consult a service manual or look online if access to the bulb isn't obvious. Auto-parts stores and your franchised dealer carry good selections of replacement bulbs. If you're replacing a halogen headlight bulb take care not to touch the glass with your bare fingers. Skin oils on the quartz glass are said to shorten its life.

5) Touch-up paint. Touching up paint flaws early can save a heap of money down the road. You can touch up small scratches and chips with touch-up paint, available for a few dollars at your car dealership and at some auto-parts stores. Make sure you get an exact color match. Touch-up paint usually comes in a small bottle with an applicator brush in the lid. Otherwise, use a small, pointed artist's brush and cover the scratch by going over it in tiny dabs. Let this paint dry for at least a day or two before polishing the car.

Great Reviews for Beck & Masten Buick GMC

Dealer-rater-logo

I have a Saturn Sky, when something goes wrong with it I always take it to Beck and Masten. Steve Sherman is such a wonderful person. He is very helpful and great with getting me and out. Beck and Masten is the only place I will ever go to when I need service. If they had had what I was looking for in a Sky I would have bought my vechile from them. If I ever need another vechile in the future I will deal with them and them only, good people I can trust.

2013 GMC Acadia Denali impresses On and Off the Beaten Path

Img_0844-620x465
The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali feels just as at home on the off-road Rocky Mountain trail as it does on Rodeo Drive.  The Rocky Mountain Automotive Press association has just completed its inaugural 2012 4xFall Off-Road Experience and the 2013 GMC Acadia Denali was one of the participating vehicles.  This event is meant to give automotive journalists a chance to sample a selection of AWD crossovers, SUVs, and 4WD vehicles in the challenging but beautiful high altitude environment of the Colorado Rocky Mountains.

I spent limited time behind the wheel of the2013 GMC Acadia Denali and in the passenger seat, both on and off pavement; it was immediately clear that this luxurious cruiser is not afraid to get down and dirty.  I was lucky enough to direct the Acadia Denali on an intermediate off-road trail near Caribou, CO, followed by a drive down a graded dirt and gravel road, as well as navigating around the small town of Nederland.  We were not using this car to crawl over large boulders, but it handled the rock littered and sometimes muddy trail without a problem.  This was even more impressive, considering that this Denali was wearing 20 inch aluminum wheels and street tires.

The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali gets its name from a rugged and wild region in the heart of Alaska, so it seems fitting to test a vehicle with the Denali badge in this off-road environment.  However, the capable AWD system and the adequate ground clearance are not the only bold attributes of this 2013 model.  The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali receives a mid-cycle refresh that brings with it a more aggressive and serious front end design.  2013 GMC Acadia Denali The headlights get the very distinctive LED daytime running lights and there was no end to the compliments and comments that these LEDs received during our test.  There are also the more pronounced fender flares and the all LED tail lamps.  The 2013 GMC Acadia Denali also boasts the industry first front center air bag to prevent the driver and the front passenger from hitting each other in the event of an accident.

Our tester was a fully loaded model that included dual sunroofs, rear video entertainment system, GMC IntelliLink media and navigation system, cooled and heated front seats, and other luxury goodies.  The sticker price for all this goodness stood at $51,840.  We will have a more thorough review of the 2013 Acadia Denali when we get a chance to spend more time with it.
