Packing Pranks in Place of Presents

Dear Readers,

Many of you are parents and understand the stress of giving gifts to young children. Every year it seems that there are newer, bigger and better items that our kiddos seem to be aware of making our jobs tracking everything down a little harder. Thankfully, there is reprieve.

On Christmas morning shouts of glee and the post-present opening quiet that settles around the house is reward enough for many devoted moms and dads. For others, pranking is the only way to say, "I love you, but you've driven me to this momentary madness." Comedian Jimmy Kimmel is approaching his third Christmas as the official Grinch jokester, inviting parents to give their children a terrible prank gift while filming their reaction.

For those of us accustomed to tiny temper tantrums, these responses are but fleeting moments of trouble for a lifetime of hilarity. Check it out and have a great last pre-Christmas weekend!

Snapshot: 2014 GMC Sierra

Dear Readers,

Are you curious about what sets the 2014 Sierra apart from the rest of the other trucks debuting this year? Let us give you a snapshot:

The new Sierra gets an aluminum hood (saving 17 pounds versus its predecessor), doors that are inset into the body sides instead of wrapping onto the roof, and aerodynamics-aiding underbody cladding and rear-wheel spats. The chassis is again fully boxed with a hydroformed front section, but it supports a front suspension that incorporates aluminum for some of its components.

GMC has endowed the 2014 Sierra 1500 with three all-new engines: A pair of small-block V-8s and a V-6. The two V-8s—a 5.3-liter and a 6.2-liter—belong to GM’s latest Gen V eight-cylinder small-block family, while the 4.3-liter V-6 is derived from the same architecture. All three engines feature aluminum blocks and heads, direct fuel injection, and come standard with cylinder-deactivation tech.

In addition to the choice of engine, the 2014 GMC Sierra continues to offer truck buyers a host of cab, bed, and driveline options. Regular-cab Sierras can be had with either a 6.5- or 8-foot beds; extended-cab Sierras come only with the 6.5-foot bed; and crew-cab models now offer the 6.5-foot bed in addition to the 5-foot, 8-inch unit available last year.

Stop in to see one today!

Poetry and automobiles are not often considered in the same thought, let alone spoken aloud in the same sentence. Thus, we thought it would be interesting to see what we could come up with if issued a poetic challenge.

We challenge you to write a haiku poem (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables) about your Buick, GMC or both (!) and post it in a comment on our G+ Local or Facebook walls!

We can't wait to see what you come up with and to get you started, check out our haiku below:

Buick GMC

Forget the TRICKS! Your favorite Halloween TREAT is how you'll find your next Buick.

Caramel Apples: Regal
You're a ton of fun and always up for trying something new!  Your biting sense of humor makes you a treat to be around--not to mention that contagious laugh of yours.  A sweetheart like you belongs behind the wheel of a Regal.

Sugar Daddies:  Encore
Like the Buick Encore, everyone can count on you to "stick around" until the very end.  You fulfill your duties as a parent, best friend, coworker, employee, committee member, and all the other hats you wear-- to the fullest.  A busy bee like you needs room--both inside the vehicle and out on the road!

King-Sized Crunch Bar: Enclave: Whoa-- You hit the mother-load!  A no-nonsense person like you should be cruising in a Buick Enclave.  You are sharp, tough, and you don’t sugarcoat anything.  There's no better feeling than a hard day's work!  Kicking back and relaxing is nice, but when it comes to defending what you believe is right, you aren't afraid to stick to your guns.

Candy Corn: LaCrosse
One thing is for certain, it just wouldn’t be Halloween without candy corn-- it's the classic choice.  Similarly, your sense of style is often described as timeless.  You’ve got impeccable taste in food, movies, and  .  People often turn to you for advice--you've got it all figured out!  That means you and the LaCrosse are meant to be.

Ready to find a Buick or GMC that suits your tastes just right?  Check out Beck and Masten Buick GMC's online inventory!

Mummy in our Tummys

Everyone anticipates spooky and kooky costumes during Halloween, but for the real fans of this fright night, give your party an unusual boost! Take a look at some of the recipes we have below made from everyday items found in your fridge:

Mummy Dogs (Pigs in a blanket) – Cut crescent roll dough into thin strips and wrap around hot dogs. Bake according to crescent package directions and use ketchup or mustard for eyes.

Witches Wand – Dipped pretzel rods are instantly transformed into “Witches Wands” with a little Halloween pizazz! Put them in containers with a small candy of your choice to hold them up.

Bones n’ Blood (Breadsticks with marinara sauce) – Use breadstick dough (store bought or homemade) and cut into strips. Use scissors to snip the ends into 2 pieces and roll them down to make bone shape. Dip in “bloody” marinara and for extra flavor, sprinkle with garlic and parmesan!

Nutty Ghosts- Nutter Butters are naturally ghost shaped, which make them perfect for dipping! Give them a bath in some almond bark and put on a couple of mini chocolate chips for eyes.

Chocolate Cherry Mice -
You’ll need maraschino cherries for this one. Make sure you buy cherries with stems. Drain them and dry them well with paper towels. Dip in almond or chocolate bark. When they are semi-dry, attach a chocolate chip for a nose, slivered almonds for ears and little candies or sprinkles for the eyes.

We hope that everything is mummy…we mean yummy in your tummy - enjoy!

In celebration of Truck Month, we’re showcasing our 2013 & 2014 Sierra, Acadia Denali, Yukon Denali, and Buick Enclave’s. The deals we have on these road warriors are on fire so turn up the heat and stop in today!

A Stroll Down Memory Lane

Dear Readers,

Have you ever wanted to turn back the clock and freeze a moment in time? For us we’ve found that for every Throwback Thursday post we see, we must not be the only ones. Today we’re celebrating a few models from the days of yore and delighting in our Buick and GMC heritage. Most brands have the ability to reach back a few decades to declare themselves “established.” We however, outrace these younger companies with our more matured car culture. The Buick lineage stretches back to 1899 and GMC can trace its roots to 1908,with the first GMC branded truck dating 1909! We have a lot to be proud of and even more to look back on. Enjoy this stroll down memory lane and feel free to comment with one of your favorite old-school memories!

Sincerely,
Beck & Masten Buick GMC.

Top Ten Road Trip Games

It never, ever fails: Within 30 minutes of stuffing the car to its gills with luggage and people for a getaway, you're left wondering how you can get away from everyone's complaints of boredom. And to think, only hours more to go! Despite popular in-car entertainment such as DVD players, truth be told, not everyone's car is equipped to offer the convenience of penguins or Dora as a babysitter for the next 50, 100 or 200 miles.

That's why we've compiled a list of road trip games that don't require any tools, paper or accessories beyond the open road. We have suggestions for passengers at every age level, although each game can be tweaked accordingly.

I Spy

Probably the classic make-time-go-by game of all time. One person looks around and chooses an object that the others have to guess, with their only clue being these words: "I spy with my little eye something that begins with (insert the first letter of the object's name)." Or the clue can be the object's color. The player who guesses the object gets to go next. The tricky part? It's not fair to "spy" something that's whizzing by the car at highway speeds. A landmark (mountain range, forest) that will be in the players' view for a few minutes is best.

20 Questions

"Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Only 18 more times to go! In 20 Questions, whomever goes first thinks of, well, anything. The first question is always, "Animal, vegetable or mineral?" After that, the players can ask pointed questions to try and guess — go around the car in a circle asking for clues such as, "Does it bark?" or "Can you peel it?" for example, although the answer to those questions can only be "yes" or "no." If you reach the 20th question without a winner, everyone has one last chance to figure it out before the "thing" is revealed and another person starts a fresh round.

License Plates

There are many ways to play with license plates, depending on the age of your kids. Young participants can call out letters in alphabetical order; the first one to Z wins. Next, have them look for doubles — or better yet, triples! — of letters and/or numbers in the plates. The one who has the most at the end of the day/trip wins. Older kids can "collect" out-of-state plates they see. (Make it tougher by going in alphabetical order.) Or they can try to build words or phrases using the letter sequence in the plates. A plate with the letters E, F and T, for example, might become the word "effort" (using those letters to start the word, in the middle and at the end). Those could make "Ed's Favorite Tacos" if you're running with phrases.

Slug-a-Bug

The concept is that players keep track of how many Volkswagen Beetles they spot on the road. We've heard of variations in which the game is limited to New or vintage Beetles, or versions where the older Bugs are worth more. In the game's original version you were supposed to punch your seat mate when you spotted a Bug, but most parents find that any game that involves hitting can get out of hand pretty quickly. So keep score some other way — tapping your seat mate, counting on your fingers (first to 10 wins) or something more in keeping with the Bug's peaceful hippie history.

Where's the Alphabet?

Perform this as teams or solo players. You'll want to utilize road signs, billboards, shop names — any reading material outside the window qualifies as long as it's spotted on your side of the car. (If you're the front-seat passenger, focus on the right.) You'll be looking for every letter of the alphabet, in alphabetical order, although the letter can be located anywhere in the word. Say there is a fruit stand with a sign for Granny Smith apples — there's your A. The exit for the Brooklyn Bridge would cover B, Road Closed is C and so on. First one to the letter Z wins. If you see "Road Closed," however, you'll probably be happy to have the nine other games listed here.

Name That Tune

As with the classic TV game show, the winner here is the one who figures out the name of the "mystery song" first. For those with singing/whistling/humming talent, this can be as much karaoke as a guessing game. Choose a theme for the game, such as show tunes, movie or TV themes, or Justin Timberlake. (Good luck, adults.) The winner gets to be the singer for the next round. If no one can carry a tune in a bucket, then try guessing the songs on the radio. Really want to mix it up? Hit the "seek" button so no one gets an unfair advantage from sticking to one particular station's format.

The Picnic Game

A memory builder for all ages. One player says, "I went to a picnic Saturday and I brought..." then says a picnic favorite that begins with the letter A, like apples. The next player repeats the opening phrase, and after "...I brought" they repeat the A item then add one that begins with B: "I brought an apple and some bananas." The third player repeats the opener, the A and the B portions, and then adds something that begins with C. Get it? Can your travelers get through the alphabet, remembering all the items everyone contributed? Try keeping track of 23 items plus figuring out what you can take to a picnic that starts with X!

Count the...

Probably even the most enthusiastic young'ns will catch on to this being busywork, but for awhile it'll be all they'll think about! And there is a bonus: Interest is likely to reignite on its own shortly after it stalls. Count the... can be anything: cows, telephone poles, headlights, train cars, blue pickup trucks — you name it. Shouting out the thing to keep track of is all that is required.

Tunnels

This one is simple: When you come to a tunnel, see who can hold their breath the longest. True, it may not be one best played by the driver (lightheadedness, anyone?), but everyone else can give it a go. We used to be amazed at our own skill at this as kids.

Geography Lesson

Geography is much more fun outside the classroom, isn't it? For this game, choose countries, cities or states (or go nuts and try rivers and lakes or capitals). Let's say your theme is states. The first player names a location, and the next player has to rattle off another state that starts with the last letter of the previous player's state. Therefore, if it were Michigan, the next state would have to start with N, like Nebraska. The A could be Alaska, and so on. Note: This one makes our brain hurt.

Fun Fact for Monday!

Happy Monday, everyone! Here's a fun fact for you: according to a 2007 Department of Transportation study, there are 254.4 million vehicles out on the roads in the U.S. Surprisingly, that number exceeds the amount of licensed drivers!

Here's a great new review from a Sierra driver in Houston!

Carscomlogo
"I have now purchased three GMC Sierra extended cab pickups from Beck & Mastin. Jason the sales rep we worked with listened to our requirements and presented us with a vehicle that met our needs. The aftermarket rep interview was painless and informative. The financial segment of our visit was also a good experience. Mark has a sense of humor and was a pleasure to deal with which is a good thing when dealing with financial people. When we picked up the truck Jason came in on his day off and walked us through the accessories of the truck and confirmed that the staff at the dealership are professional and customer centric."

Buick Grand National, GNX to Return on Cadillac ATS Platform

After filling its lineup with small, proper, four-cylinder cars over the last couple of years, General Motors may finally be getting back to its gnarly roots.

First came the 2014 Corvette Stingray, a lean, muscled-up 450-horsepower ‘Vette in a European suit.

Next was the Chevrolet SS, an old-school, rear-wheel-drive full-size sedan with a 415-horsepower Corvette-derived V-8 under the hood.

Now comes a report from Inside Line that Buick is considering resurrecting its high-performance past with new versions of the Grand National, GNX and the T-Type.

And unlike some previous GM attempts to go back to the future, these cars won’t be weak-kneed frauds hiding behind iconic badges.

All would be based on architecture borrowed from the new rear-wheel-drive Cadillac ATS, Inside Line says, which is a pretty darn good place to start.

The T-Type and Grand National would likely share powertrains – probably a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 good for 350 to 400 horsepower, Inside Line says.

Even better, the GNX might get a version of the all-new LT1 small-block V-8, which supposedly will fit into the ATS’ engine bay, according to Inside Line.

Cadillac is believed to already be at work developing a high-performance V version of the ATS that may be equipped with a V-8, so the hot-rod Buick might not be much of a stretch.

And how much energy would a new GNX bring to a Buick showroom full of LaCrosses, Regals and Enclaves?

Don't let the winter months damage the seals in your windows! Follow this tip:

Leaves

Don't make compost in your car!

As you tackle fall's bounty on your lawn, leave some energy for removing the leaves that find their way into your vehicle.

Leaves, twigs and other organic matter can cause havoc with gutters on your house -- and the equivalent on your car. When debris builds up in areas of your car where water is supposed to flow out, you can get leaks or corrosion.

The air plenum near the windshield is a classic spot where this can happen.

If you have a sunroof, open it up and poke around in there, too. Sunroofs have drains that flow water that sneaks past the seals down to the ground. Leaf gunk in there can make for wet headliners or worse.

Less common, but more problematic: Animals may make nests under the hood You may need a mechanic and an animal trapper to fully solve this problem

Check out today's great review of Beck & Masten North Buick GMC!
